As Usual

I dream that my sister is back; I want to go buy a new planner because mine has ran out of pages, how did I not notice? But I need to go to the bathroom first and my sister has locked herself in it. I try to poop in an empty cereal box on the balcony, but there’s a hailstorm and it’s just too much.

A Fight That We’ve Had Time And Time Again

I dream that I’m having a fight with my sister. You know I have trouble sleeping, I say. You know my anxiety spikes and I get heart palpitations when you don’t come back at night. Couldn’t you at least tell me if you’re gonna be late or early? Just that, I don’t want an exact time.

I will never tell you, my sister says. What I do is none of your business.

There Was So Much Family Drama Around That Shirt That I Can’t Possibly Convey?

I dream that my sister is teaching Gran about art history with very poor results. Why is everyone is this family so DUMB?! She cries. I’m sitting at their table making Gran tennis shoes from scratch; I use a yellow t-shirt that belonged to my uncle, he’s not happy about it and demands I make another, identical, one. I panic because I only vaguely remember what the t-shirt looked like, there was a face with bags under their eyes. I draw a tired yellow emoji in MS paint and print it on a fresh shirt.

I Wish My Dreams Made More Narrative Sense

I dream that my brother and I are staying at my sister’s for a few days. She lives in the same building I rented my apartment in during uni. Is midnight and she came back home already, we’re waiting for dad to come pick us up, but now my brother is sick and I have to drive home alone in our old blue car. I’m almost home when I remember I can’t drive. I’m on a motorbike now, I don’t even know how to go faster, but I figure out you have to squeeze the handle. I get home and mom is in the kitchen, she says happy birthday. It’s not my birthday I say, but I check the calendar and indeed it is.

It’s Kitten Season After All

I dream that my sister and I find a wicker basket on the sidewalk, inside there are a mama cat with three kittens, one ginger, one tabby and one black; they are really small, no older than a few days, but their eyes are open. Each of the kittens is stuffed inside a doll pillow case with some plushies, as if a little girl has left them there.

I suggest we take them to the nearest vet, my sister decides we should take them home with us instead. She grabs Mama and one of the kittens, I grab the other two. The ginger one slips and falls from my hand, my sister steps on it. The kitten flattens on the pavement like a sole fish, but it’s incredibly unharmed. Our nosy neighbor asks what we are carrying, my sister tells her to “mind her own damn business”.

We get home and my parents are utterly unhappy.

Summer Is Looming

I dream that weather has suddenly warmed up, to the point it’s now summer. My sister is back home and we’re sharing a room once again, like when we were children; for once I’m not angry about it. She wants to go to sleep and I do too because I’m exhausted, but my pajamas are too warm and I need to find a t-shirt, also I’m 1000 steps short of my daily pedometer goal. I lay on the bed and start kicking my legs in the air, hoping it will help.

Some Snippets That As Usual Feel Like They Belong Years In The Past

I dream that I’m walking to school when I realize I’m not wearing a mask, I put a scarf over my face and run to the city market. I buy ten surgical masks from a stall and I’m so mad about wasting my money like that.

Then I dream that my sister bursts in my room upset because she no longer can become a teacher: she asked a friend to mail some forms and he sent the wrong ones. To make her feel better I tell her the same exact thing happened to me; it somehow makes her even angrier.

Then I dream that I’m playing a videogame with my siblings while simultaneously living it. We’re on a pirate island, swimming in the beautiful tropical water to look for treasures at the bottom. We’re about to enter a yellow building when my mom appears at our door carrying a plate of pancakes.
